Entry requirements at a glance

Good news for Ivorian travellers: East Africa is an accessible region. Kenya does not require a visa, and Tanzania, which includes the Zanzibar archipelago, offers an electronic visa that is easy to obtain.

Kenya: visa-free for Ivorians

Ivorian passport holders can enter Kenya without a visa, for stays of up to 60 days. They are also exempt from the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), under a regulation of July 2025. So you travel with your passport, your return ticket and your usual travel documents. Kenya does, however, still apply the health requirements set out below.

Tanzania and Zanzibar: a 50 USD e-Visa

For mainland Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) as well as Zanzibar, you need a Tanzanian visa. Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so a single visa covers both. It costs 50 USD and allows a stay of 90 days. It can be obtained online (e-Visa) or on arrival.

Our recommendation: go for the e-Visa before you leave. You avoid queuing at the airport and travel with peace of mind. Your MALYA adviser will help you with the application.

What about a combined Kenya + Tanzania trip?

On our Kenya + Tanzania tour, you enter Kenya without a visa, then cross into Tanzania with your Tanzanian visa. So you only need the Tanzanian visa, which you should apply for before departure.

Health: yellow fever is compulsory

This is the one not to forget. For Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar, the International Certificate of Vaccination against yellow fever is required. Keep your vaccination card with your passport: it may be checked at boarding as well as on arrival. Antimalarial treatment is also recommended: see your doctor a few weeks before you travel.

Money and practicalities

In Kenya, the currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES); in Tanzania and Zanzibar, it is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). The US dollar is widely accepted in safari camps and hotels. For safaris, pack neutral-coloured clothing (beige, khaki) and a light jumper: mornings are cool at altitude.

Good to know

Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim: in Stone Town and in the villages, cover your shoulders and knees and keep swimwear for the beach. Also make sure your yellow fever card is up to date before you book. Entry rules change regularly: the information in this article reflects the MALYA travel requirements matrix checked on 31 October 2026. Before every departure, our advisers check the current requirements for you (visa, health, documents) and let you know about any changes.
